WELCOME TO GATEWAY BEAUFORT WEST
Beaufort West is a town located in the Western Cape Province. It is the largest town in the Arid Great Karoo region, as is known as the "Capital of the Karoo".
Beaufort West was the first town to be established in the Central Karoo.
The town was founded in 1818 and initially named Beaufort after Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort. The town was renamed Beaufort West in 1869 to avoid confusion with Port Beaufort in the Western Cape as well as Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape.
Beaufort West became the first municipality in South Africa of 3 February 1837 and had the country's first town hall.
One of Queen Victoria's bodyguards, Avon Bruce Brand, designed the town dam in 1879.
Patricia de Lille, leader of the Independent Democrats was born in Beaufort West.
in 1849, Sir Fraser observed and famously documented a herd of Springbok that took three days to pass the town.
ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF BEAUFORT WEST
3 February 1837 the first municipality in South Africa were established in Beaufort West, as well Beaufort west had the first town hall in the country.
Today the town hall forms part of the museum together with the mission church (sendingkerk) and the mission rectory (sendings pastorie) known as the Beaufort West museum complex.
The museum houses an exhibition of the life and achievements of the towns well known son, Christiaan Neethling Barnard (Chris Barnard).
Renowned heart surgeon that preformed the first human - human heart transplant in South Africa on Louis Washkansky on the 3de of December 1967.
Barnard's father Reverend Adam Barnard preached at the mission church, Barnard and his 3 siblings grew up in the mission rectory.

Today the Cypress tree measuring 420 square roods is the only one left of the about 25 similar cypress trees that were planted in the original Dutch Reformed Cemetery in 1834.
